Andaimes 

Quando levantam um edifício, os pedreiros

Cuidam de testar os andaimes, bem certeiros.

E, para que as tábuas não resvalem nas junções,

Fixam os escadotes, apertam as ligações.

Mas, mal a obra acaba, tudo é derrubado,

Firmando a solidez do andar acabado.

Por isso, querida, se às vezes te parecer

Que entre nós existem velhas pontes a ceder,

Não temas. Bem possam os andaimes desabar,

Que nós já teremos construído o nosso andar.

Scaffolding

Masons, when they start upon a building,

Are careful to test out the scaffolding;

Make sure that planks won't slip at busy points,

Secure all ladders, tighten bolted joints.

And yet all this comes down when the job is done

Showing off walls of sure and solid stone.

So if, my dear, there sometimes seem to be

Old bridges breaking between you and me

Never fear. We may let the scaffolds fall

Confident that we have built our wall.

Seamus Heaney nasceu em 1939, em Castledawson, na Irlanda. Em 1965 casou com Marie Devlin e, no ano seguinte, publicou um dos seus volumes mais conhecidos, Death of a Naturalist. Entre as muitas obras poéticas contam-se Human Chain (2010), District and Circle (2006), Opened Ground (1999) - que foi nomeado 'Notable Book of the Year' do New York Times -, The Spirit Level (1996), Selected Poems 1966-1987 (1990) ou Sweeney Astray (1983). Foi contenplado com o Prémio Nobel em 1995. Morreu em Dublin, em 2013, com setenta e quatro anos.
